History Behind Issue: The Heralds Ordeal continues from Silver Surfer #71, as Silver Surfer and Firelord search for Nova.

Plot: Silver Surfer and Firelord, in an attempt to find Nova, find themselves on Calculex, a scummy place full of prostitution and adult entertainment. They come across a cat-like girl who says a fiery woman (like Nova) is at a place called Flamers. On their way there, a strong built creature challenges the Silver Surfer to a dual (to help his reputation). The Silver Surfer declines, which puzzles the alien. Then Silver Surfer and Firelord show up at Flamers, where Nova has become an exotic dancer and seems to have no recognition of the Surfer or Firelord. So the two try to grab Nova and get her out of that dump. She doesn’t want to go, however, and the audience doesn’t seem to like their attempt to take Nova away either. Meanwhile, Morg is on the planet which he found for Galactus. He annihilated everyone, except for a tribe which tries to prevent him from entering the cave. He quickly kills them and enters the cave. Inside he finds a priest. After a bit of force, the priest agrees to tell Morg what is special about the cave. He explains the legend. Many years ago, when the priest’s people were still barbarians, a warrior king named Eqnuus was wounded and wandered into the cave. He drank from the Well of Life to quinch his thirst, but when he drank from the well. He was healed and enlightened. The king then turned them into a peaceful world. The well would give anyone what they desired. Morg desired power. Back on Calculex, Silver Surfer is confronted again by the alien who challenged him earlier. Nova is still being held without her will. This caused a disruption, and all the aliens Flamers get into a classical western bar fight. In the middle of the scene, the alien challenges the Surfer again, who accepts this time. The alien oddly knocks Silver Surfer out cold very quickly. Suddenly, as the lied on the ground, Nova remembers him and cries out for him. Also on this issue, a cameo of Jack of Hearts and a new look for Nebula, both lead-ins for upcoming issues.

To be continued in Silver Surfer #73, THE HERALD ORDEAL, PART 4

Comments: The writing is good, but the art is a bit of a let down. M.C. Wyman doesn’t do nearly as well with his penciling as he did in earlier issues. His Morg still looked great, but Silver Surfer, Firelord and Nova were a bit scratchy.   Still, he did a better job than most trying to fill in for Ron Lim, who comes back next issue!
