Regular Series Canceled, New Maxi-Series to Replace It!

The Silver Surfer regular series has been canceled with issue #146, but not due to sales, at least not entirely. Sales of the Silver Surfer have been a little disappointing. Out of Wizards Top 100 Comics Sold for June, Silver Surfer #142 ranked 89. The only other Marvel regular series book to rank under it was Daredevil and Ka-Zar, both of which are being canceled. But the real reason is not sales. J.M. DeMatteis, who is leaving the title with issue #145, was going to be replaced by Superman: Man of Steel writer Louise Simonson. But Simonson asked Marvel Comics to form a new 12-issue maxi-series in replace of Marvels current series. This will also give Louise Simonson, and artist John J. Muth, an extra few months to work on the new project, which begins in the first quarter of 1999. It will also attract new readers with a new issue #1.
But some readers are not happy with the cancellation of the third volume, which has spanned almost 150 issues, and think it is odd that Marvel would cancel the series just before it hit issue #150. Still, it seems many readers in todays comic market like the idea of a maxi-series with a beginning, middle, and end to a long story saga. Marvel Comics has a total of five other maxi-series already scheduled to hit the stands in the near future.
What do you think about the Silver Surfers cancellation, new maxi-series, and new creators? Post about it at the Silver Surfer Message Board.
